The primary purpose of the NVQ level 2 is to develop and confirm the learner’s occupational competence as a plant operator. As a competence-based qualification, it provides documentation for employers, industry managers and card schemes, that the candidate has the skills and knowledge needed to meet the nationally-recognised standard to carry out the role.
As this is a competence-based qualification, learners will be acquiring the knowledge and skills required through either on-the-job experience or in a learning environment.
This qualification has a range of pathways and is linked to typical job roles that learners will encounter within the industry.
Achievement of the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations could enable the holder to work with the machinery and equipment used on major civil engineering projects, construction and house-building sites, roadworks, demolition sites, quarries and railways.
Once completed, candidates can apply for a Blue CPCS or NPORS card.
The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction) will develop knowledge and skills in the safe operation of construction machinery. Learners can specialise in various specialist plant machines including our most popular:

What is an NVQ?
An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a work-based way of learning – which is carried out at a college, school, or workplace.
Each NVQ level involves a range of on-the-job tasks and activities that are designed to test you on your ability to do a job effectively.
You may start out by applying your knowledge to basic tasks, and progress to incorporating fundamental principles into a variety of contexts.
To gain the qualification, learners must achieve mandatory core units below, plus a minimum of one unit from their chosen pathway
- FX7481 – Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- FX6X68 – Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
What are the entry requirements?
There are no specific entry requirements to study for an NVQ level 2.
You can be any age, and are free to start at a level that suits you – although you may need to complete a level 2 NVQ before starting a level 3.
You’ll also need a job or work placement that allows you to develop the skills needed to complete your qualification.
